(Except It Didn&#8217;t)<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-3\" href=\"https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/setting-stops-better\/#Summary_Of_Stop_Placement_Strategy\" >Summary Of Stop Placement Strategy<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Understanding_Entry_Points\"><\/span><strong>Understanding\u00a0Entry Points<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The overall concept to grasp is this: \u00a0<em>The higher the buy entry\u00a0point of a stock, the\u00a0tighter the stop price generally should\u00a0be.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is because a higher entry point is typically\u00a0further away from key support of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/s\/swinglow.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swing low<\/a>, which increases risk.<\/p>\n<p>This means you need to have a basic understanding of how to identify the level of your entry point on a stock chart.<\/p>\n<p>The annotated daily chart of $GDDY below explains how to do so in a simple way:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/%7Erick\/\/charts\/2014\/161006GDDY.png\" alt=\"$self serve \" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Entry 1 &#8212;<\/strong>\u00a0If entering this stock at this level (around $32.70),\u00a0a stop can be placed below\u00a0the\u00a0lows of the base (as labeled).\u00a0 This stop price is great because it forces the stock to make a new low within the base in order to prove the entry wrong. In other words, you definitely want to be out of the trade if this stop is triggered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entry 2 &#8212;\u00a0<\/strong>The same stop price could be used with entry 2, although the distance to the stop price is wider (slightly higher risk). \u00a0A buy entry at this level\u00a0is a bit more obvious, which sometimes creates false breakouts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entry 3 &#8212; <\/strong>A buy entry at point 3 would occur when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/blog\/miss-breakout-buy-pullback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buying a pullback<\/a> after a breakout. In this case, you should set a stop beneath the previous swing low (~ $33) because a stop below the low of the original base would now be 8-15% away (depending on stock&#8217;s volatility).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entry 4 &#8212;<\/strong>\u00a0If buying at entry point 4 (second move up after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/blog\/top-5-qualities-stock-breakouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">base breakout<\/a>), your stop could also be placed beneath the previous swing low (which is now at a higher price).\u00a0\u00a0 These sort of entries should move higher swiftly\u00a0(be right or be right out). If there is no immediate follow-through to the upside, selling right away is an option.\u00a0 The challenge\u00a0with these late-stage entries is that you\u00a0may need\u00a0to take a few shots before getting it right.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Go_Daddy_Except_It_Didnt\"><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4765 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/godaddy-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Go Daddy GDDY stock\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/godaddy-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/godaddy-110x110.jpg 110w, https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/godaddy-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/godaddy-144x144.jpg 144w, https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/godaddy-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Go Daddy! (Except It Didn&#8217;t)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When we bought\u00a0shares of\u00a0$GDDY in our model portfolio at $35.08 on October 3, it was obviously at &#8220;Entry 4&#8221; on the chart.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate lack of bullish follow-through is why we decided to sell at $34.60 on October 5.<\/p>\n<p>Such quick action limited our loss to just 1.4% and minimized risk.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, we continued to hold the shares\u00a0from our <em>original\u00a0<\/em>September 27 entry of $34.01 (Entry 3).<\/p>\n<p>With a better entry price, there was less risk of holding the Entry 3 trade at that time.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summary_Of_Stop_Placement_Strategy\"><\/span><strong>Summary Of Stop Placement Strategy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While many nuances can be at play when reading stock charts, the main takeaway from this article is:<\/p>\n<p><em>The lower the buy entry within a base, the more patient you can be.\u00a0 The higher the entry, the less patient you\u00a0can afford to be.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u00a0cannot set a\u00a0stop price below a significant low\u00a0because it is 10-15% lower than\u00a0the current price, then it is better to use a tight stop of 3-5% instead.<\/p>\n<p>If our entry into $GDDY would have been closer to $33, we could have stayed with\u00a0the full position\u00a0as it chopped around the breakout point at $34.<\/p>\n<p>However, since we\u00a0initiated our position around $34 and added to the position at $35, the lack of follow-through forced us to exit (the additional shares) with a small loss.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that volume should also confirm breakouts, especially when buying stocks at Entry 3 or Entry 4.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the overall health of the market should also be considered when setting stops.<\/p>\n<p>If the market is in moonshot rally mode, buying a\u00a0stock at a higher entry point\u00a0within the base\u00a0will often work.<\/p>\n<p>But when\u00a0conditions are choppy, it is often better to be more creative by entering near the low of a base, setting your\u00a0stop below the base.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Set it and forget it&#8221; is an excellent approach to stop placement we use in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/services\/swing-trade-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swing trading service<\/a> when buying at Entry 1 or 2.<\/p>\n<p><em>What did you think of this article?
