ahead of earnings season<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"QQQ_%E2%80%93_Mixed_signals_in_the_NASDAQ_100_ETF\"><\/span>$QQQ &#8211; Mixed signals\u00a0in the NASDAQ 100 ETF<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Since healthy bull markets are typically led by the performance of leading growth stocks, let&#8217;s analyze the weekly chart patterns of both the Nasdaq 100 ETF ($QQQ) and Russell 2000 Small-cap ETF ($IWM).<\/p>\n<p>Beginning with $QQQ, the NASDAQ 100\u00a0remains in pretty good shape, as it closed back above the 10-day moving average (an important near-term support level for strong uptrends) <em>and<\/em> within just 20 cents of its prior &#8220;swing high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, $QQQ also formed back-to-back <a title=\"Hanging man defined\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanging_man_(candlestick_pattern)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hanging man candlestick<\/a> patterns (generally bearish) on the weekly chart time frame.<\/p>\n<p>With mixed bullish and bearish signals, last week&#8217;s low now becomes a pivotal support level to monitor in the near-term.<\/p>\n<p>If last week&#8217;s low is broken this week, we could potentially see a rapid pullback to the 10-week moving average (teal line on the weekly chart below):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/~rick\/\/charts\/2014\/140721QQQ.png\" alt=\"$QQQ SWING LOW \" width=\"803\" height=\"704\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>By the way, in case you are wondering why I am highlighting the weekly chart time frame, rather than the daily chart, it&#8217;s because the weekly chart eliminates much of the &#8220;noise&#8221; found in the shorter-term daily chart.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this allows you to focus more on the &#8220;big picture&#8221; of what is really happening out there.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"IWM_%E2%80%93_Big_volume_support_in_Russell_2000_Small-cap_ETF\"><\/span>$IWM &#8211; Big volume support in Russell 2000 Small-cap ETF<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Small-cap stocks may have bottomed out with last week&#8217;s heavy volume stalling action in Russell 2000 Small-cap ETF ($IWM).<\/p>\n<p>Although higher volume accompanied last week&#8217;s decline in $IWM (hinting at institutional selling), the ETF\u00a0closed above the prior week&#8217;s low <em>and<\/em>\u00a0its 40-week moving average, suggesting that buyers were stepping in on weakness:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/~rick\/\/charts\/2014\/140721IWM.png\" alt=\"$BUYING ON WEAKNESS \" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Despite its pullback to major support, $IWM is not yet actionable on the long side because it may take some time to digest its recent pullback\u00a0before it can launch to new 52-week highs.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, I am keeping $IWM on my internal\u00a0watchlist as a potential <strong><a title=\"The Wagner Daily signup\" href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/services\/swing-trade-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Wagner Daily<\/em><\/a><\/strong> buy entry in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SPY_%E2%80%93_Rangebound_action_in_S_P_500_Index\"><\/span>$SPY &#8211; Rangebound action in S&amp;P 500 Index<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Nasdaq Composite closed in the middle of its current range, so we could potentially see one or two more days up followed by another pullback to the 4,400 level.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 Index ETF ($SPY), a popular benchmark index for the broad market, has been quite choppy and range-bound.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0NASDAQ Composite (which has been a bit weaker than the NASDAQ 100) has also been range-bound, but the S&amp;P 500 is in a much tighter (albeit choppy) range.<\/p>\n<p>$SPY could potentially touch the highs of its range, then retrace to the lows of its recent range within the next week.<\/p>\n<p>Without a clear breakout to new highs very soon, I expect more choppy price action as stocks head into quarterly earnings season.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CSOH_mode%E2%80%9D_ahead_of_earnings_season\"><\/span>&#8220;SOH mode&#8221; ahead of earnings season<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As for new swing trade setups for potential buy entry, most individual stocks that technically look good right now are scheduled to report earnings within the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This gives us good reason to be in &#8220;SOH mode&#8221; (sitting on hands) with regard to new swing trades, especially after recently locking in some <strong>nice gains on $ANET (+15%) and $BDSI (+30%).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I only stay in stocks through earnings if I already have a large profit buffer from our original buy entry, there really isn&#8217;t much that is actionable for me right now.<\/p>\n<p>For example, both Tesla Motors ($TSLA) and Facebook ($FB) are &#8220;A-rated&#8221; stocks forming bullish chart patterns, but earnings are just around the corner ($TSLA reports on July 31 and $FB on July 23).<\/p>\n<p>$TSLA&#8217;s bullish <a title=\"How to trade the cup and handle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/blog\/how-to-trade-cup-handle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cup and handle chart pattern<\/a> is offering me a low-risk buy point above Friday&#8217;s high (around $222), with a stop price around $212.<\/p>\n<p>However, with $TSLA scheduled to report earnings next week, I have not listed this as an &#8220;official&#8221; swing trade setup in my nightly swing trading report:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/\/~rick\/\/charts\/2014\/140721TSLA.png\" alt=\"$TSLA CUP AND HANDLE \" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Restoration Hardware ($RH) and Palo Alto Networks ($PANW) are two bullish stocks that have\u00a0already reported earnings, but the chart patterns are not exactly actionable for ideal buy entry yet.<\/p>\n<p>I will continue monitoring both charts for low-risk buy entries to develop within the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, we will keep riding the gains in existing\u00a0<em>Wagner Daily<\/em> stock trade winners such as $TSEM (+21% unrealized gain) and $ENPH (+29% so far).<\/p>\n<p>If either stock meets my strict criteria for buy entry, I will provide subscribing members of\u00a0my <strong><a title=\"Become a member\" href=\"https:\/\/www.morpheustrading.com\/services\/swing-trade-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nightly stock pick newsletter<\/a> <\/strong>with exact entry, stop, and target prices in the report.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cfmonitor\" style=\"padding-top: 30px;\"><center><script src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\" async=\"\"><\/script><!-- Footer of content - Large --> <ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: inline-block;
