Potential undercut and double bottom at the 2-year low<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In last week&#8217;s report, we said that recent, record high volume in Bitcoin ($BTC) could mark a significant, <em>longer-term<\/em> bottom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That longer-term analysis still remains valid, but remember our <em>shorter-term<\/em> bias was slightly negative. Here&#8217;s what we said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Given the plethora of overhead supply at higher prices, current resistance holds more weight than the single day of support. As such, <strong>odds now favor sideways to slightly lower prices until $BTC gets back above the 17,600 level<\/strong>. However, a period of sideways chop seems more likely than substantially lower prices.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As anticipated, $BTC failed to reclaim the 17,600 resistance level and indeed edged lower for the week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No biggie, as we remained on the sidelines due to the previous week&#8217;s market Sell signal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/~rick\/charts\/2021\/BTC112122.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/morpheustrading.com\/~rick\/charts\/2021\/BTC112122.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"715\" height=\"416\" title=\"\"><\/a><figcaption>Press image to view full size<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, $BTC has formed a higher low at the 15,800 level. If $BTC breaks below that prior swing low, then expect a test of the 2-year low at 15,600.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If $BTC tests the 15,600 low this week, pay close attention to the volume pattern and price action.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One <em>possible scenario<\/em> is that $BTC could undercut its 2-year low, then quickly reverse back above that level on high volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IF that happens, then we will be looking for a <strong>potential new buy signal of a bullish reversal day<\/strong>&#8212;but that&#8217;s just one possible scenario. Anything can happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Bitcoin hanging out near its low, most of the altcoin market has also been quiet. Many charts now have a similar pattern of chop and lower volatility recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, it&#8217;s a great time for us to break away from our usual format of chart analysis to discuss the &#8220;big picture&#8221; of what&#8217;s happening in crypto now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"FTX_was_a_problem%E2%80%94not_DeFi\"><\/span>FTX was a problem&#8212;not DeFi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you have completely ignored all news over the past 2 weeks, you are likely aware that FTX, formerly the second largest <em>centralized<\/em> crypto exchange, recently filed for bankruptcy. In case you missed it, press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/investing\/cryptocurrency\/ftx-declares-bankruptcy\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/investing\/cryptocurrency\/ftx-declares-bankruptcy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> for a summary of the wild FTX story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>News of the recent FTX meltdown has a lot of crypto investors running scared right now. Considering the billions of dollars many crypto investors lost with this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/what-happened-to-terra-luna\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/what-happened-to-terra-luna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TerraLuna<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/11\/how-the-fall-of-three-arrows-or-3ac-dragged-down-crypto-investors.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/11\/how-the-fall-of-three-arrows-or-3ac-dragged-down-crypto-investors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3AC<\/a> collapses, that fear is understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, FTX became the latest example of the crypto space being hurt by the actions of a few bad actors&#8212;but <em>not<\/em> the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Crypto projects that are truly decentralized (the original goal of crypto) and fully run by computer code have had zero issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitcoin itself, for example, has once again stood solid through all three major crypto disasters (which, again, were originally flawed by design).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/learn\/what-is-defi\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/learn\/what-is-defi\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Decentralized Finance (DeFi)<\/a>, which relies 100% on computer code for risk management, has also stood tall throughout this mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FTX (a centralized exchange) failed because it was regulated by governments&#8212;<em>not<\/em> by computer code.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Code is law. DeFi did NOT when FTX did because it is regulated by code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Code is regulation, which is why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$AAVE is fine<\/li><li>$UNI is fine<\/li><li>$MKR is fine<\/li><li>$COMP is fine<\/li><li>$YFI is fine<\/li><li>$GMX is fine<\/li><li>$SNX is fine<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>DeFi protocols like $MKR $AAVE and $COMP have performed exactly as designed&#8230; which is precisely to prevent liquidity issues (FTX). <strong>DeFi is doing just fine, and will continue to do so.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What was the CEO of FTX lobbying <em>against<\/em>?\u00a0 DeFi.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 25px;\" src=\"https:\/\/a.slack-edge.com\/production-standard-emoji-assets\/14.0\/google-medium\/1f914@2x.png\" alt=\":thinking_face:\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What could have prevented the FTX meltdown?\u00a0 DeFi.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 25px;\" src=\"https:\/\/a.slack-edge.com\/production-standard-emoji-assets\/14.0\/google-medium\/1f914@2x.png\" alt=\":thinking_face:\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which exchanges already publish real-time proof-of-reserves?\u00a0 DeFi.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a.slack-edge.com\/production-standard-emoji-assets\/14.0\/google-medium\/1f914@2x.png\" alt=\":thinking_face:\" style=\"width: 25px;\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, despite this, proven DeFi is likely to become the target of regulators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_can_I_do_to_protect_my_crypto_assets\"><\/span>What can I do to protect my crypto assets?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At Morpheus, we have only ever mentioned Kraken and KuCoin as our preferred <em>centralized<\/em> crypto exchanges (CEX) for crypto swing trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although FTX had lots of hype, we&#8217;ve always preferred more time-tested CEXs that focus on active traders, as well as internal\/external security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We prefer Kraken as a <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/alexandria\/glossary\/fiat-on-ramp\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/alexandria\/glossary\/fiat-on-ramp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fiat on-ramp<\/a>\/off-ramp, and KuCoin for its wide range of available altcoins <em>and<\/em> low fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the FTX news broke, KuCoin even took the proactive, transparent step of showing their crypto holdings to the public. Kraken put out a similar statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>NEVERTHELESS<\/em>, every crypto trader should ALSO maintain a personal crypto wallet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping SOME funds on a centralized exchange makes sense for ease of active trading, low fees, ability to set stops, ease of use, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as we always say in the chatroom, it&#8217;s best to store your crypto assets on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/investing\/hot-wallet-vs-cold-wallet#:~:text=The%20main%20difference%20between%20hot,can%20keep%20your%20data%20offline.\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/investing\/hot-wallet-vs-cold-wallet#:~:text=The%20main%20difference%20between%20hot,can%20keep%20your%20data%20offline.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hot or cold crypto wallet<\/a>. of your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For long-term investing, cold storage such as a Ledger or Trezor device is the way to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TIP:<\/strong> Buy your crypto wallet directly from the manufacturer, to avoid any (minimal, but possible) chance of third-party hacking before your purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Again, consider keeping only the amount you&#8217;re actively trading on <em>any<\/em> CEX.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When crypto assets are stored at a centralized exchange, the exchange acts as a custodian for your crypto.
